Grundfos offers “leakage-free” MTR pump

Grundfos is offering new variant of its MTR and MTRE coolant pumps, in which any seal leakage drains back to the coolant tank – or “drainage back to tank” (DBT).

A worn shaft-seal is impossible to avoid, since it is a wearing part, says Kent Kynde, Grundfos Business Development Manager.

“Normally if the shaft seal fails, you will see the leaks on the outside of the pump. With this new MTR-DBT solution, any leaks will just go back to the tank, where you have your liquid anyway,” he says.

Japanese OEM customers who deliver machine tools to the automotive industry had requested this solution, he says.

“Japanese automotive companies require ‘no failure,’ and visible leaks are considered failure – even if they do not affect the performance of the pump,” says Kent Kynde. “So we made this variant, in which you will not see a possible seal leak. The leakage, if any, will collect in a channel in the pump and then go down into the tank.”

For years, Grundfos has had a similar solution on its MTH pump, he adds, and it has worked very well – proven by a failure rate of less than 0.02%.

“This solution will allow a longer time between your servicing,” Kent Kynde adds. “Previously, if you saw shaft seal leakage, you had to change your shaft seal. But if you don’t see the leak, and if it does not influence your performance, you will not have to stop the machines to service the pump. Therefore, you reduce down time and the cost of the parts you produce.”

The new DBT variant still has an internal shaft seal, which is easy to replace as the only part subject to wear.

The variant is immediately available on the small range of MTR pumps – the 1S, 1, 3 and 5. Grundfos will release the DBT on the medium MTR range (10, 15, 20) in 2014.
